DVD Playback appears (and sounds) scrambled

Sorry,forgot to mention, I got the information from the Hardware Information program in Ubuntu , and not Windows' Device Manager.

It may be a DMA problem. Use hdparm to activate DMA on your DVD player. If hdparm is not installed, install it. and enter in a terminal

sudo hdparm -d1 /dev/scd0

assuming /dev/scd0 is your DVD drive. You can be sure of that entering

ls -l /dev/dvd

Thanks for the help. I don't think it worked, but hopefully this will give
more advice on the problem.

Hi Michael !

After thinking about it, you cannot use hdparm with your drive. install sdparm and try to tweak your disk speed settings. I have not dig through sdparm, But my guess is your problem comes from a too low data rate.

I had installed the dvd playback functionality in Jaunty per the instructions at ubuntuguide.org and still couldn't play a particular DVD movie.

When I used VLC or Mediaplayer to play the movie, the picture was scrambled and the application would then crash.

What fixed it for me was to cd into ~/.dvdcss and then remove the directory with the DVD movie name(contains a bunch of cryptically named files in it). After that, the DVD movie played fine.
