Vista(Longhorn) has stored a copy of your master boot record somewhere.

You must get to that record and restore it.

Or tell Vista to restore to an earlier date before the Linux install.

If you can't get into Vista(can't get pass the grub) and you have a compiled copy of Vista, just bite the bullet and reinstall Vista.

Grub does have a command line interface but if I remember right when grub is starting up and errors you can't use the command line.

But if by chance you can get to the command line, you can tell grub to change the boot order, make Longhorn first.

The help section of Ubuntu has these commands. Or go to http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/
