ubuntu will not install

it goes through the instalation processes then sais i/o error in dm1 then a big long number that keeps going up and up on the screen i have windows xp on this machine with no problems it is a asus a7v KT133 chipset with ata 100 support on the board..... any ideas.... i realy want to use ubuntu..... if i could get it to wrok on my machine oh it is a duron 900mgh with 512 of memory and a ati 9600 all in wonder.... hoping to make it a media server oh and alll i have at home is dialup....

Have you tried to check the disk for errors? It's an option at the first screen. It's possible it was a bad burn.

Check for bad burn, also you could try installing the alternate CD installiation, this is text based, but a popular choice if the original LiveCD has problems.
