For my best knowledge, lnk is not a document, but a link to one, a pointer to a document instead. Like a hand pointing at the moon - lnk is not the moon, it's the hand pointing at it. So it is really probable, that you want to open something else than the lnk. You may try to open the lnk with a text editor as Gedit, and hopefully you can figure out from the information there the exact location of the real document you are looking for.

Right click on the lnk file, and select Open with... and select Text Editor (or "Gedit", or such). You will see some garbage, and in the garbage, there will be something like "C:\Document\ and\ settings\blalba\Name\Documents\Desktop\document.doc" or such. That is what describes where the document you really want to open is.

If it is a CD, and the only thing there is the lnk, than the maker of the CD made a classic mistake, and forget to put the document onto it.

I tried that but no joy, the disc did work fine when I was using Windows XP, so I thought it would be a bit easier to sort. I don't understand I am a little out of my depth here I think.

lnk is a Windows format used with shortcuts. If Gergely's suggestion didn't work, could you post the contents of the lnk file (if it's not huge) here?
