Appearance of pages in Firefox

Asked by Mark

Am newcomer to Ubuntu/Linux. Have noticed that, when using Firefox, the characters in web pages seem fuzzy compared to when I use Firefox in Windows. My screen resolution and refresh rate are the same as in Windows. Has anyone else noticed this, and is there a solution? Thanks.

Mark,

You may have some form of anti-aliasing enabled in System - Preferences - Appearance - Fonts.

Experiment with different options for "Rendering" (and also "Smoothing" and "Hinting" under the "Details" button) until you find a configuration you're happy with. Personally, on an LCD display, I prefer Sub-pixel smoothing" with no hinting.

Good luck!

Chris

Chris. Thanks for your suggestions. It turned out that the range of fonts available in Firefox is different by default in Windows and Ubuntu. I managed to get fonts like Times New Roman, Arial and Courier New by installing msttcorefonts from Synaptic.

Best wishes
