Linux4Dummies - Book Recommendation Please...

Asked by Rohith Saravanan

I am new to Linux. Installed Ububtu 7.10 i386 Desktop version yesterday. I have very minimal programming experience, and no prior exposure to Linux. I am interested in learning and contributing. Please point me in the right direction to get started, recommend a book.

There are several good books, including the Ubuntu book (1) which is very much aimed at new users. The best way to learn though is just to jump in. There are a number of resources to help you such as the forums(2) and the help wiki(3). Don't forget the system documentation available from the question mark on the menu bar.

If you are interested in contributing then check out the Ubuntu homepage in the contributing section - you don't need to program, the documentation and artwork teams are always looking for volunteers.

Nothing against the Official Book, but I didn't find it all that useful. I liked this one

This one is great for explaining how to tweak different things or set something up. It might be a bit out of date now, though, but still fairly relevant.
