Without using easyubuntu, how do I set my computer up for MP3s, etc...?

Asked by george_rutkay

MPEGs, MP3s, WMVs - all of the neat advantages easyubuntu provided.

How do I do all of that set up without easyubuntu?

Thanks!

Install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package from synaptic package manager or from the add programs feature. Here is a short description of what it does:

Commonly used restricted packages
This package depends on some commonly used packages in the Ubuntu
multiverse repository.

Installing this package will pull in support for MP3 playback and decoding,
support for various other audio formats (gstreamer plugins), Microsoft fonts,
Java runtime environment, Flash plugin, LAME (to create compressed audio files),
and DVD playback.

Please note that packages from multiverse are restricted by copyright
or legal issues in some countries. See
http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/licensing
for more information.

For DVD movie playback and a few other things, you need to add the medibuntu repositories. Go to this web site for a very easy how to:
http://www.medibuntu.org/

click on the "repository how to" link and follow the instructions. You are only copying and pasting a total to 2 lines into a terminal, One to add the repository and one to add the gpg key. It takes literally seconds to do this.

I'll try this when I get home (I'm at work now, using Windows) and let you know whether I was successful or still need some more help. Thanks.

Using Automatix is definitely not such a good idea, see http://mjg59.livejournal.com/77440.html for details.
