can't play .avi digital TV program in Gutsy Gibbon 7.10

I have just upgraded from Feisty Fawn to Gutsy Gibbon 7.10. I'm trying to get all my usual programs configured and up-and-running.
Real Time Bill Maher.avi won't play. I tried Totem, it says can't figure stream. I've tried VLC, it doesn't work. I installed MPlayer and it won't work either. How do you just go into Synaptic Package Manager and get the necessary multi-media programs that i used ok in Feisty Fawn and get them to work here?

Make sure you have multiverse and universe enabled in synaptic (System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager->Settings->Repositories). Open add-remove programs, make sure your searching in 'All Available Programs' and search for "Ubuntu Restricted Extras". Installing that should get .avi's to work correctly.
