Running on a Sony VAIO VGN-FE14SP using the Alsa drivers. It seems to only be the microphone input that is broken.
Ubuntu: 7.10 - x86

I get the following error message:
gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat: Could not open resource for writing.

Same Ubuntu as you.
Can use speakers but my mic is broken, provides a lot of feedback but still I'm unable to record using any applet like gnome-sound-recorder. Have a SB51.

Cannot have my mic hear me no matter what alsamix setting I use.
When from system-soundpreferences-soundcapture I select alsa and then TEST it I receive the following message:
Failed to construct test pipeline for 'gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat'devices-audioconference

Any idea? Are you in the same situation? When do you get the message?

I was getting the message when trying to record from my microphone. I have solved the problem however. It appeared as if the microphone was muted.

I opened the 'Sound Recorder' --> File --> Volume Control (Alsa Mixer).

Make sure the microphone isn't muted on the 'Recording Page' and enable 'Microphone' on the 'Switches' page.

That did the trick for me.

but this messages keeps appearing to me even if I can record sound.. strange..

Albech seems to have pretty much solved this, but it didn't work straight away for me.

I found that it was necessary to sudo gconf-editor to set the mixer option on the audio to alsamixer first (mine was set to empty). Then, when the microphones, auxillarys and pre-amping were all enabled in 'Sound recorder', my sound recording returned. You perhaps don't need all these enabled, but reading around they were all suggested as options and I couldn't be bothered to find out which was right...Umm.

Incidentally the sound recorder volume control is tabbed, and as you enable the various options more tabs appear, so if you cant see the appropriate options , press on and they will magically appear.

Hi guys,

I found something interesting. I bought a USB sound card (for around 5 dollars). I got the "Could not open resource" error while testing the microphone in gnome-sound-properties. But if I change the "Audio Conferencing->Sound playback" to another sound card. Then the microphone will work. If I change it back to "ALSA", the error appear again.

But if I do the following, (assume ALSA is using USB audio)

1. change "Audio Conferencing->Sound capture" to "ALSA"
2. change "Audio Conferencing->Sound playback" to "USB Audio",
3. Test microphone, it works now. Although both are actually using USB Audio.
4. change "Audio Conferencing->Sound playback" to "ALSA",

Then everything works. All error disappeared! I can listen to music and make skype calls and using any sound applications at the same time.

But I have to repeat the procedure whenever I reboot the machine.
