Ubuntu 7.10 hangs up at GNOME Display Mgr

Asked by jailaney

I have a new MSI K9VGM-V board with ADM 64 X2 4200, and am using on-board VGA interface. Ubuntu 7.04 has no problems booting or installing. However, Ubuntu 7.10-desktop-amd64.iso hangs up during booting with last scipt message, "Running local boot up scripts (/etc/rc.local)". When I do a CTRL/ALT/DEL, see the following message, "STOPPING GNOME DISPLAY MANAGER", and the system shuts down. I can send you a complete description of my system if you need it.

When the computer shuts down, the first thing is does is stop the Display manager, so that behaviour is normal (but as the display manager is shutting down, you may not normally see those lines). When you boot up, try pressing Ctrl-Alt-F7 - which should switch to your graphical level. If this doesn't work, then there's a bigger problem.

Press ctrl-alt-f3 and you should have a textual login. If this doesn't work then I'm out of ideas - but other people are (probably) more informed than I to give you a better answer.

Can you help with this problem?
