can't connect to hotmail

Asked by Yvon

Hi,
I saw that Ubuntu is a very extraordinairy system that will make Windows to say goodbye one day ...
But, it's really frustrating to get no answer after days and weeks of research, just because I need to know why Ubuntu with Firefox is not able to connect to hotmail and google servers,

Worst, as I can't go on hotmail server, I have to alternate from Linux computer thru Windows computer,
and back to Linux to finaly write this message!

I'm the kind of person who really want to put Windows in it's own Trash ...

So, I hope you can help on this, or, at least, tell me if there's another way to send emails ?
Thanks!

What I ment is that:
Everytime I try to go on the site (Hotmail.com), a blank page appears with
this:
"Unable to connect to hotmail.msn.com server". same if I try to go on the
google page,
Unable to connect to google.ca server ... and I wonder why?
Thanks!

Can you connect to any other website? Have you tried to use any other Internet programs, like gAIM/Pidgin, for example, for instant messaging? Perhaps your Internet connection is simply not working.

How are you connecting to the Internet? Is it a wired or wireless connection? Do you have a router? Is it a wireless router?

Hi, and thanks for help,

Here are the answers to your questions:

Can you connect to any other website? Yes I can (except Google page)

Have you tried to use any other> Internet programs, like gAIM/Pidgin, for example, for instant messaging?
Yes I tried Pidgin, and it is connecting to instant messaging, and I can reach my contacts,
but if I try to get email messages it came to the a page "unable to connect to hotmail.com

Perhaps your Internet connection is simply not working (False) the connection is working

How are you connecting to the Internet? Is it a wired or wireless> connection? it is a wired connection

Do you have a router? Is it a wireless router? no I do not have any router

NOW: I saw one of a possible mistakes, as I had import my favorites Bookmakrs from Windows thru Ubuntu,
it seems like a bug's comming out like incompatible addresses. I don't know if its possible but,
as I retype the adreesse of Ex: Windows live messaging, it start to work, not at a 100% cause it crash sometimes
but I can get my messages with time.

And as we are in this discussion:
Is there a way to send emails to Hotmail or msn or yahoo or else, with a program existing in Ubuntu?
Thanks again ...

It looks like your Internet connection is working OK and that your bookmarks/favourites may be broken... maybe you're right and the importing didn't work?

Can you please try a couple of things for me?
1. Can you open your web browser and try going to www.hotmail.com ?
2. Can you open the bookmark manager (Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks), select the bookmark that is not working, click the Properties button and paste the Location of the bookmark in your next reply? Please do this for all the bookmarks that aren't working.

With regards to your e-mail, you can certainly use Firefox to check your Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail. For Hotmail just go to http://www.hotmail.com/ and for Yahoo! Mail go to http://mail.yahoo.com/

Sorry I did a mistake ! ... Here they are ...

Wrong hotmail addresses:

This address is fron the properties of the bookmarks manager:
http://login.passport.net/uilogin.srf?id=2

This address is where we have to write our hotmail address and password:
http://login.live.com/login.srf?id=2&vv=500&lc=1033

And this one is supposed to open the account:
http://www.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/sbox?t=99fPvCngKGmIsQUNYiQEFiPWQmWX7oggfgb3!FBuE9*TtGS6ChO6j6BjuBHtH8abT8zgSg1NPgM3wmpoYTOynxif2KKYftI80DWeWcaRtHhMVGl02IK3Kp*KN4nc1ajmzC&p=9tiU81OKEDiuf1yQvn82WFL5NPj2eBlEGexPMRSAo6*fjIVicBy90SLz1iirqZtPBzv6GfIsUkgoAW6waPGmRRJ3bdCGYWowMUzHYvZ7lbjUB!uh*e8GSCfug6iyYd0!!YjMT86cfhBdpA4ONDCR*vZSOIZLWrFM6kAnHGLkpWbchl6OQhrsiAvA$$&lc=1033&id=2

Wrong Google address:

This address is fron the properties of the bookmarks manager:
http://www.google.ca/

And this one is supposed to open the google page:
http://www.google.ca/

All I can suggest is just fixing the bookmarks manually. Open the properties for the Hotmail bookmark, and change the address to http://www.hotmail.com/ instead of the huge address already there. Some of these addresses might only work in Internet Explorer, because applications like MSN Messenger don't use any other web browser.

To Mik:
My hotmail problem was because I've import favorites addresses from windows ie,
and this was opening and old version of hotmail unfortunately incompatible.
As I ereased those addresses and retype newly in Ubuntu,
it sent me to Msn Live Mail and star to operate correctly.
But ... I still can't log thru Google page directly, and some pages can't be reached,
and I don't know why, and can not help for the instance ...
To be connected by hardwire or wireless dont seems to make any difference.
As "Rouben saids,
"Some of these addresses might only work in Internet Explorer,
because applications like MSN Messenger don't use any other web browser."
Le me know about your pogression...

Ubuntu. Lucid. With Firefox 3.6.10 the live.com hotmail page is blank, since the last upgrade.
Solved, sort of, by installing OPERA,
Hotmail works fine with Opera, so it is not a problem of Live.com hotmail but a problem of Firefox.
Until the problem is solved, this is a solution.

----------------
Ubuntu. Lucid. Usando Firefox 3.6.10; live.com hotmail no funciona dede la última actualización,
La página de hotmail aparece en blanco.
Lo he solucionado parcialmente, instalando OPERA.
Hotmail funciona perfectamente con este navegador.
Mientras Firefox resuelve este problema, usar OPERA es una solución.
