Hi Dave,

as far as I know Power PC is not supported by the newest releases anymore, sadly. But the 6.06 Long Term Support Version is still for download as a PPC version, so go ahead and grab an Desktop ISO for Mac Power PCs at http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/6.06/. This should work perfectly fine.

Hope that helped

Leon

Hi Dave,

You can download the 7.04 version from here : http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/feisty/release/ (choose MAC arch of course) and soon you will be able to download the 7.10 version from here : http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/gutsy/release/

These are ports, so they are not supported like base versions (i386, AMD64 and servers) but benefit of regular updates from Ubuntu developers.

Hope that it helps you, don't hesitate to ask further questions to us.

Thanks guys - that puts me 1/2 way there. Now I have a link to something that mentions my machine.

The remaining concern before I commit to this is if I should attempt to partition my HD. And if so I think I will have to learn how to do that! ;-)

Again, thanks - I really appreciate your help,

Dave

So, Dave,

which version did you finally go for?

I've got an older Mac PPC (iBook G4), and i'm hesitating which Ubuntu version to download -- the officially-supported LTS 6.06 one, or the newer community 7.04 (or 7.10) ?

How to decide?

As far as partitioning HD goes, I did that a few days ago, following what i could make of various posts about it. But i don't quite understand where yaboot comes in, etc. What I've landed up with is a partitioned HD, one w/ OS X on it & the other "free" (i did a complete re-installation&reformating from a mac CD).

Also, if someone can point me to which threads are going to be most relevant to me & the issues I'll face, that'd be cool.

Other q's: what's the diffce btw Ku, Xu and Ubuntu? (i'm guessing Edu doesn't apply to me!).
- Is there a TUTORIAL out there on how to use command prompt window language, which seems to be so essential to doing patch-repair-fiddle work, which despite all 'usability' etc of the Ubuntu family, still seems to be necessary...!

THANK YOU!
Sylvia

Hi Sylvia -

I think I'm going to wait for awhile until I
understand more about partitioning.

Good luck with what you're trying,

Dave

Okidoke!

Thanks Dave, for your response. Well, i guess we''re kind of in the same boat.

My 'boat' has since yesterday been redefined AS:

NOW I'VE *GOT* THE ISO (Gutsy 7.10) CD for ppc -- NOW WHAT?!! it ain't easy for the likes of me. Every thing i click on, osx does not know how to open it. I guess booting from cd means smthg else (turning it off for instance & booting from there?)

Where is there a clear enunciation of the STEPS?

RSVP ASAP Forum People :-), it'd be really appreciated. Thank you.

I've found this, which may help other people too. This is an intro to linux/ubuntu, from a lover's point-of-view. I think it only outlines for pc's though (and not macs).

I would like an update to this question. It is now 2010 and what is the most current version for PPC G5?

I have several drives and have set aside partiions for multiple operating systems. I am not sure how this will work when choosing a differnt boot device. How is that done and where do I really find the best versioin and HOW do I donwload it.

This site is difficult if youy do not want the latest version.

Hello,

I was looking for same info as Daryl and came across this page.

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/10.04/release/

It looks to be the right one for IBM G5 at any rate I'm downloading it now.

Can you help with this problem?
