how to Shut-Down computer

Asked by Satinder

When I shut down Ubuntu everything goes smoothly and all of the applications show themselves as shutting down, but when the bar under the Ubuntu logo finishes the shut down process the computer makes a sound that sounds like the computer fans have turned off and the screen just stays there and the light on the computer doesn't turn off at all even if I wait for one hour. So I just press the power button and it turns off. I just want to know if it is normal for you to manualy turn it off after the screen shows that applications have shut down and the bar goes to zero?

That may happen on some computers. Does your computer have ACPI or APM support?

I have a similar problem. Although it only happens every 5 shutdowns and only if I have my usb dvb-t tv card pluged in.

They are power management suites. Try typing dmesg | grep ACPI in the terminal and putting the output here. If you get no output try dmesg | grep APM. The case is important.

We can see whether or not you have ACPI or APM support then. Most modern computers should have it.

I am having kind of a similar problem. Although, all settings in power management are set to never turn off, my computer moniter is powering down after appx.10 minutes. My screensaver isset to come on in 1 hour, and never does. All I ever see is a blank screen! Please help, this has gotten very annoying!

Restart seems to work fine. Help this is driving me crazy......................
