Does vista appear in GRUB?
Are you able to boot into vista?

GRUB -- ubuntu's bootloader -- needs a small part of linux to function (/boot folder), when you totally remove ubuntu grub can't work.

Probably there is still something like "fixboot" or "fixmbr" command that should do more or less the same as "fdisk /mbr". In XP documentation (i'm not sure if it's still in vista):
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/bootcons_fixboot.mspx

There should also be an option on vista dvd to "fix boot problems", which would probably reinstall vista's bootloader.

At worst use some third party tool like EasyBCD: http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1.

Boot with your Vista CD installation disk and try to go thru the installation procedure. There's a choice of repair installation. Follow the instructions for repairing the MBR . I once did it but i forgot the whole process but I think the process would walk you thru it. All it needs to do is remove the GRUB loader that was installed by Ubuntu put the Vista loader.

The XP procedure does not work for vista.
I hope this helps.

It's simplest to just ignore Ubuntu and install windows from scratch. Put your windows cd in the drive, reboot, when the blue installer loads delete all partitions and use all the space for installation (all your data on disk will be lost, so make external copies if you need to).

From my former answer I see that the problem might have been more complex, but i don't remember what it was and the question no longer says...
