bottom panel of ubuntu

Asked by k_chupe

i have followed a guide on how to customize the default bottom panel. i've made it look very similiar to os x dock. there's only one thing that i want to do to it. can i remove the buttons on the ends? i have it set to near transparency, and the only thing that's sticking out like a sore thumb is the buttons/bars on the ends.

There are no buttons, unless you are referring to something else. Could you please post a screenshot?

the ones on the sides. they're not really buttons, they're more like grey vertical bars. check out link then scroll to bottom of the page:

I managed to replicate on my system. Indeed, it is a bug.
What do we do then?

1. The component that has this issue is "gnome-panel", part of GNOME. You can find that by right-click, About.
2. We visit http://bugzilla.gnome.org/ and browse for the bug reports. We choose the "gnome-panel" package, thus
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/browse.cgi?product=gnome-panel
3. There are plenty of reports. We do a search for the word "transparent",
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/buglist.cgi?query=product%3Agnome-panel++transparent
4. We get several results. The following two results describe this bug,
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=103287
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=343004

What you can do next? Join the bug reports and say politely that you face the same problem, and you are interested for a solution of this.

i didn't mention any errors or bugs. i was just wondering if you could modify the bottom pannel in such a way that the hide buttons or bars or whatever they are called, could be taken off. if you click on the link, then scroll down to the picture of the modified panel, w/o any graphics manager used.

Currently, GNOME does not support this feature of making transparent those panel "handlers" on either side of the panel. You can see screenshots at the following report,
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=343004

Ubuntu is an open-source project, which means that the development process is transparent. You can delve into a great deal of detail and locate where exactly is a problem happening. With my entry above, I show where is exactly the problem. It might be a bit too technical.

If you want a workaround for now, you can click on Properties on the panel and set the option "Expand". Then, the panel has full width with no "handlers" on either side.

sorry, i didn't know you were telling me how to get around the problem. i'm not very technical with ubuntu yet. i'm still a newbe. i'll give it a try.
