Problem Installing Ubuntu 7.04 as a dual boot on my laptop

Hi I'm trying to install Ubuntu 7.04 as a dual boot alongside Windows XP (already installed) on my Dell Latitude Laptop Computer with Centrino Dual Core. I defragged Windows, error-checked, and cleaned junk out of my hardrive (now 26.7 gig free space). Then I went to the bios setup and changed the order of the boot to check for a CD to boot off of first before booting off of the hard-drive and canceled the other default applications as bootable. When I popped the disc in and restarted my laptop, I get a message stating, "Your CPU does not support long mode. Use 32-bit distribution." Would someone please tell me what this means and help me fix this problem? Because I would really like this thing to work!

Which Ubuntu disc are you using? The AMD64 (64-bit) version, by any chance? If you downloaded and burned an ISO file, could you tell me which file you downloaded (filename)?

If you do have a 64-bit install disc, then you need to get a 32-bit disc instead. I may be mistaken, but I don't think Core Duos can run true 64-bit Linux. And besides, to get best multimedia support (video and audio in particular), it's best to use the 32-bit version. To get the proper version, follow these steps:

1. Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
2. Click "Ubuntu 7.04 - Supported to 2008" under "Desktop Edition"
3. Click " Standard personal computer (x86 architecture, PentiumTM, CeleronTM, AthlonTM, SempronTM)" under "What type of computer do you have?"
4. Click the green "Start Download" button.
