"Ubuntu 7.04 for your PC" won't install

You might want to try the "alternate desktop" CD, which offers a different (text based) installer.

In three weeks the next ubuntu release (7.10, Gutsy Gibbon) will be released. So you might want to wait for that version, which hopefully will install without problems.

Unhappily, I have already tried the Alternate install...with the same
results. I'll ask you; do the updates on an 'old' release add up to a new
release? Are the new releases designed to save the data in the old ones?
This new release thing could be time consuming.

Well, yes. I think I will try installing the 'hot CD' again...and let it
hang, if that's what it's doing for a really long time. Maybe my problem is
impatience. Then I'll try the alternate install...and give it a lot of time.
Then I'll try the 6.06 and see if it still installs. If it doesn't, that
would indicate another problem. By the way, if the 6.06 installs, is that an
indication that 7.04 should also?

Absolutely! When 6.06 installs on your system and 7.04 does not, then it is a (regression) bug. You should probably try gutsy gibbon. It has many bugs of 7.04 fixed.
A new install will overwrite all old data on your harddisks. If you have important data files on it, backup before installing.

And yes, sometimes it just looks like it hangs. Be patient ;-)

I tried the installs of 7.04 with both the 'Live CD' and the Alternate. Both
hung up. I successfully installed 6.06 and am using it at this moment.
Wouldn't that indicate that 7.04 should install?

This is what happened when I tried to install with the 'live CD'.
I got a nice page with the Ubuntu Logo and the word UBUNTU.
I got the following lines. Are these what are referred to as 'icons'?

Start or Install Ubuntu
Start Ubuntu in safe graphic mode
Install with driver update CD
Check CD for defects
Memory Test
Boot from First Hard Disk
I tried the first and second choices with the same result. The bar below the
Logo begins to fill, then hangs up and the Cap light and Scroll light blink.

With the Alternate install:
Same thing with the Logo and Ubuntu.
The following lines. (Icons?)

Install in text Mode
Text mode install for Manufacturers
Install a Command Line system
Check CD for defects
Rescue a broken system
memory test Boot from first hard Disk

I get lines of code scrolling down the screen until it reaches:
[170.174704]
The Cap and Scroll light blink
The last lines of code are:
170.172374]==========
170.172413] Code:89 c3 83 e3........
170.174663] [ 170.174704] _ (with the underline _ flashing?)

I tried the 'Live Disk' in my other computer and it appeared to work fine.

Thanks for the info, and sorry for the slowness of my reply. I've been on
the road. I have the 'gutsy gibbon' ready to install, so maybe I'll have
some good results with that.

So, what is a 'regression bug,' and why is this the first time I've heard of
it? Is it rare?

I gave up on 7.04 and reinstalled 6.06. That worked just fine until I could
download 7.10. 7.10 also installed and seems to be running flawlessly, as
indicated by the fact that I can write this Email. I guess the problem
is...well, avoided and forgotten.
