How to have 3D Desktop on Ubuntu Gusty

Asked by Dariel Dato-on

I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10 "Gusty Gibbon" beta.

To my understanding, Gusty comes with Compiz-Fusion. However, after I enabled the desktop effects, I could not find how to make the desktop rotate in a cube.

Does the 3D desktop work right out of the box, or is there something else I need to install?

Thanks for your help!

You need to use "ccsm" aka, compizconfig-settings-manager. I think it
may already be installed, if not, it is available via synaptic or the
command line apt-get. Using that you can enable and configure a lot of
special effects.

Thanks Alan Mc, that solved my question.

Alright, I got the rotation to work, but now the problem is that I have only 2 desktops. In other words I have a two-sided flat panel that can rotate, instead of a four-sided cube!

I tried to go to the desktop switcher preferences, but I there was no option to change the number of desktops.

Any ideas?

P.S. If I disable the desktop effects, I can set the preferences up to 6 desktops. But as soon as I enable the desktop effects, it reverts back to two.

Under the "general option" area in ccsm, select the "Desktop size" tab
and move the "Horizontal virtual size" slider to "4" or whatever size
you prefer, also change "Number of desktops" to be "4" as well.

Correction: in order to be able to use the gnome workspace switcher with
the cube, you should set "number of desktops" to be one.
