I broke something

with apt-get.... i all tried to do was just update the system, have no idea where to begin.

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:

What version are you updating? Are you using the standard, official ubuntu? What packages are you holding (not upgraded)? And what did you do (just "sudo apt-get update/upgrade")?

A directory seems to be missing /etc/rc4.d, create it or reinstall "sysv-rc". This is a part of the startup infrastructure, maybe you have some idea why it's not there?

Probably try:
sudo apt-get --fix-broken install

If this doesn't work go to:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure <package name>
or even:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure --all

then went ahead and mkdir the missing rc4.d (why it was missing i dont know everyone else is hanging out in the ./etc/ directory

then reran dpkg its working....

what the system is gonna be like after its finished, that's another thing... but at least its moving.

i would push the problem solved button but i am kinda weary about it till it reboots. (still logging output though... check back in later)

Breezy badger... that's some history. ;) From the package numbers i can tell you're upgrading to edgy, so you would have skipped dapper and that may cause trouble.

yeah after a reboot and a rerun of aptitude with update and dist-upgrade a few times i get... this every time.

try running these commands

sudo apt-get clean
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get upgrade

then try sudo apt-get install tea

some of those commands may help

What do you have in your sources.list? Now the versions show as per feisty, so it got even worse.

So i would say you have two paths.

Either change your sources to dapper, and try to fix everything manually using methods 2-3 from that article i've linked earlier. Basically that would mean creative use of "--fix-broken", specifying package versions, and (the less the better) using some forcing with dpkg if the former two doesn't work. And then upgrading as the book says, sequentially (don't dist-upgrade until you have a working setup).

Or go for feisty. This one should be easier accomplish, "sudo apt-get --fix-broken install" should suffice, but will your system be worth anything after that, can't tell.

Do you have the means to make a clean install? Whatever you chose you should be able to solve it in the end, but some artifacts may be left, particularly if you start forcing, and the work required may not be worth it.

BTW i rolled it a ways back to dapper then back up to edgy, its from edgy to feisty it gives me this GNUPG error

What does tell you: gpgv --version?

This should just be a warning, so apt-get still should work, so i would just try to reinstall gnupg:

sudo apt-get --reinstall install gnupg
