Cant Load Live CD

OK i have the lovely ubuntu cd (original not burned) however when i try to install i get an X console error and will not load the GUI. while loading there are no errors but when it tries to load the gui it gives error and does not start.

i am running a dual boot with vista and MEPIS. i have already a partition set aside for the future install of Ubuntu or Kubuntu (prefer Kubuntu) but neither CD works. both fail at the same spot, loading or the attempt at loading the GUI. i am totaly stumped and any insight would be most appreciated, thank you.

Can you please post the error (i.e. take a photograph of it with a camera or write it down) ? Does it not boot in the safe graphics environment? Are you sure the CD is ok (select "check cd for defects" in the boot menu)?

thanks for the reply. yes the cd is ok, and i will post back with the exact wording of the error message, sorry did not think to try with safe graphics. I also started a thread in the ubuntu forums and i was given an option to try. it was also suggested that the problem may be coming from the graphics card, ubuntu just not licking it. so i will try the suggestions and post back.

thanks ubuntu, that was all i had to do is boot in safe graphics. not sure why i did not try that before; too obvious i gues!? anyway tried the live cd and really liked what i saw, so i installed it. thanks ubuntu your project is amazing!!!

hi tom.didnt get any joy with any of the suggestions that you made but i did manage to burn a mirror.it couldnt load into my laptop.i tried loading ubuntu in via a straight mirror down load with wubi as a kicker but it stopped after 440 meg loaded with a 515 error message.i had a little more luck with my girlfriends tower but it said it could not load fully because she only had 255 meg and it needed 256 meg to complete.my local computer shop is as much help as a chocolate tea pot.they dont have any experience of ubuntu or problems exept if its windows related.im not giving up on ubuntu.it was so nice to use for two days with all the stuff that is available not tied in to bill gates and co.my main interest is mechanical/motorcycle design,so a good 3D drawing package is a bonus and its just not available for windows at a price i can afford.
