Japanese Characters don't work properly

Asked by Stevos May

I am new to ubuntu and have just installed version 10.04. I live in Japan so use a Japanese keyboard setup. I type in English mostly and but I also want to use Japanese -hiragana, katakana and kanji.

I have read around but still can't get the Japanese characters to work properly. I have selected anthy through iBus and can switch between English and Japanese by clicking on the keyboard icon at the top of the screen. However, I can only write in hiragana and the space bar does not give a list of kanji as it previously did when I used Windows. Hiragana only is of little use.

Please help!

You may want to alter the SCIM input method

A bit out of date, but maybe some parts are still relevant:

Oh, the trigger key is different in anthy, I think it is Ctrl+Space -- I don't use japanese input methods however...

Thanks, I followed the advice to install the language pack under system, admin, language support. I thought I had already done that but obviously I hadn't.

Thanks for helping to resolve.
