Upgrade decision question before Install

Asked by terrell phillips

I want to make the switch to Ubuntu from having Windows XP as my OS.

However, I would like to know if my old, large desktop Gateway tower can be "gutted and overhauled" to a 64-bit system before I go about installing Ubuntu. I have a Gateway computer model ATX AEG LX2 700X, serial : 0028011783, Pentium(R) 2.40 GHz, with 512 RAM. Can it be completely upgraded from within, or should I just buy a new case tower and purchase the new components?

The second part of my question as a newbie is this: My wife is a huge ESPN online Live streaming college football fan. If I change OSes from XP to Ubuntu, will she still be able to watch her ESPN college football games streaming?

I live in Snellville, Georgia, but it appears that all of the folks that love Ubuntu only meet up in Athens, GA. Are there any Ubuntu followers who live near me? I'd really like to make the switch to Ubuntu but would like to know that there are user group members near me.

Feel free to drop me an email at: "<email address hidden>" or call me at (770) 377-1980. I am Terrell Phillips.

If the TV show is not encrypted and is not affected by DRM (Digital rights management) after installing ubuntu-restricted-extras it should work.
And with 512MB RAM it should be big enough for reasonable work using Ubuntu. The only thing that in some (but seldom) cases might give trouble is the graphics card. And (in even more rare cases) the sound card. So it is better (before you deprive your girlfriend from the only way to watch ESPN) to post any details of the sound and graphics card your computer is using here before installing Ubuntu - or as a second thought - just boot the Computer from the Ubuntu CD and try if Video and sound works.

Since not all video and audio codecs are included with the live CD watching ESPN might fail using the live CD, though.

It'll run it fine. ESPN simply uses flash / embedded video whic Ubuntu can do.

Hi Terrell,

Without knowing the full details of the case it's hard to tell how feasible it would be to completely upgrade the machine. However, I imagine it would be possible, but getting an entirely new tower with all-new components might still be smarter.

Upgrading the CPU to a current 64-bit one would require a motherboard upgrade; current motherboards use different kind of RAM than your present motherboard; with the new motherboard you'd probably need a new hard drive with a SATA interface; and you would probably also need a new graphics card. In other words, you'd have to replace pretty much everything inside the case.

If there's no special reason for keeping the same case or some particular components, it would probably be easier to get an all-new computer and recycle the current computer as a whole to someone who has use for it than to replace almost everything and end up with a load of old components without a case. There isn't much of a difference in price either.

With that said, your Gateway should be able to run Ubuntu at least somewhat comfortably as it is. 512 MB of RAM may be a little tight but at least that can be upgraded quite easily if you're otherwise content with the computer.

In case you haven't found it already, there's a forum at Ubuntu Forums for the Georgia Local Community team at http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=210. If you can't find anybody there, perhaps you could try posting a separate question about that here with a more descriptive title line so that it might better catch the eye of people from your area.

Yes, of path you may installation Ubuntu on the outside hard disk. The difficult aspect if so may be to set up the boot manager in a way that the laptop might be able to boot additionally without the outside tough disk plugged in here https://theheadsoccerunblocked.com/

Can you help with this problem?
