when i go into restriced drivers nothing butsearch then nothing

Hi,

i have a problem installing the driver for my ATI Radeon Xpress 200M video card and enabling 3D acceleration. Although i've read that 3D acceleration is not supported by this video card, <A HREF="https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/AsusA6Rp">the Ubuntu laptop testing team website</A> sais that it is possible by using fglrx driver.
I am a new Ubuntu user and I couldn't figure out how to install the driver and enable 3D acceleration, so I'd appreciate your help.

Hello,

So there are two ways to do that. One with the restricted driver manager, and one with the Add/Delete program.

1st one : In the System menu, Administration part, you should find the "restricted driver manager" which should list your video card. You just have to check the box in the list to activate the driver, and it's finished !

2nd one : In "Add/Delete" program (which is at the bottom of the Applications menu) you type in the "search" field "ATI driver" and after a few seconds it should display a list with "ATI binary X.org driver". You check the box near to it, click on "apply" wait during install and then push on OK.

After a reboot, it should work !!

If you need a tool to control the driver in a fine way, I advise you to go in System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager and then Search the "fglrx-control" package, right click on it in the list, select "select for install", apply, confirm and exit. In one of the system menus, you should see after that a tool to tune your driver preferences, if you need to do it.

For people facing the same problem and reading this message, note that I managed to install the driver following these instructions, but only after reinstalling Ubuntu.

Hi Nicolas,

When I install the ATI driver via restricted driver, after rebooting the system, the login screen donesnt appear, instead there is a black screen and X does not work. So I urged to boot the ubuntu in the recovery mode and reconfigure the X.

Also, there is no ATI driver listed after searching in Add/remove.

hey guys,

I still cant fix the restricted drivers.. it says "Could not apply changes! Fix broken packages first..

When i use the add/remove in applications the ATI binary x.org u have said is not working too..
it says "The application conflicts with another installed software"..

there is no add and delete in the administration section and there is no restricted driver section in applications
