Problem with add remove to update medibuntu dowloaded software

Asked by Costas

In add/remove some software does not show installed and the same shows installed in synaptic (examples are transcode and remind).
When I force add/remove or synaptic to do a reload, I receive the following error and they cannot finish downloading:
W: GPG error: http://packages.medibuntu.org dapper Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 2EBC26B60C5A2783
I noticed today that the site: http://packages.medibuntu.org takes for ever to load and at times provides me with a 403 error and "You do not have permission to access" note.
As a result both transcode and remind (and possibly more) are somewhere in my computer but they cannot be used.
Any help will be appreciated

Hi:
it could be that the web is down, but I just logged to:
http://packages.medibuntu.org
and it went fine, try again.

Thanks Rodrigo, I just tried to log again, it took 4 minutes and I got the answer:
Forbidden
You do not have permission to access this document. I have a cable connection and tried other sites that are relatively slow at times, they loaded in one or two seconds.
There must be something more to it. I will try again tomorrow.
Thank you anyway

Sorry,
to me it works just fine and is fast too. It look like you could have some problem with your ISP. If you think you have the answer you were looking for, mark the question as solved. or try tomorrow and tell me.

Hi Rodrigo
I always use Firefox, I tried the link again and it took me 4 minutes to get the same answer:
Forbidden
You do not have permission to access this document.
Then I opened another 5 sites and it took me no more than one or two seconds each.
I do not understand why my ISP would have a problem with medibuntu, if anything it could be a windows bug since this computer is dual boot windows 98SE and Ubuntu, but I do not understand how my ISP or anyone can read my windows partition while I am in Ubuntu.
I will not close the question yet and I will check more tomorrow.
Take care
Costas

Hi:

The web just works fine for me. Im using firefox from ubuntu and it goes fast and smooth. if you are using linux don't worry about the windows partition for this matter. All I said is that maybe your ISP has some kind of problem connecting to that web. Are you trying to reach the main web? (http://packages.medibuntu.org) or a different part, maybe that is the problem.

W: GPG error: http://packages.medibuntu.org dapper Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 2EBC26B60C5A2783

For this problem you need to add thier key by doing this in a terminal.

wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update

Hello Michael
We are almost there but not quite. I followed your instructions and from the terminal added the above command "copy and paste". Asked the password and after a few minutes (3 or 4) it was all done. Then I checked again add/remove and no sign or remind or transcode. In the search this time it did not give me an error, but there were errors listed in the detail view which I missed (since the screen moves very fast). I did a second check with synaptic and again did not give any errors as before but errors were listed in the detail view. I managed to catch a few with a Print Screen action and they seem to be related to some translations in en-CA (I live in Canada) and some free and non free packages from packages.medibuntu.org dapper.
Maybe I will try again the reload tomorrow and see what is going on. Is there any way to save the full list of the reload operation?
I have the feeling we are getting there, too early to give up.
Thanks a lot
Costas

Hello again and good morning, I tried again the add/remove and synaptic, same errors as yesterday. I also tried the packages.medibuntu home site and the same story also, took about 4 minutes to get to the index.html page. Then I had an idea, i searched for remind with the "search for files" program built-in Ubuntu. I found numerous files including remind. I selected the only executable and made a launcher in my desktop. I selected properties and made the icon executable and read/write by me. I then clicked to open a screen appeared and asked me what I wish to do: Run in Terminal, Display, Cancel and Run. I tried them all but nothing showed up, only a quick screen for a fraction of a second which I could not read. I can see two possibilities: (1) This program can only be run from terminal which makes it useless for me at the moment and (2) This program needs something more to become usable in a graphics mode. One minor possibility is that I also have the program kAlarm installed and running all the times.
The transcode is a different story, I tried again avidemux and various attempts to change the audio but all in vain.
I decided to close this issue at the moment and do some reading. For now I can live without the video encoding and with the simple kAlarm I have windows 98se in this computer and XP in a separate. I am hoping in a few months to be able to use only Ubuntu. I will be back when I have more news.
If anyone has something new please write it here. I will be visiting this page periodically and report also my future findings.
Thanks to all for your help and spirit.

I had borked up my own sources.list and replaced it from the list at http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_dapper

Then I got the same problem as yourself after an "apt-get update". I followed the directions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

This fixes it (it mentions some business about the GPG key there).
