Will applets created for KDE, run under GNOME if KDE is not installed?

Asked by KnowBuddy

Will applets created for KDE, run under GNOME if KDE is not installed? Or is it maybe on a case by case basis, that one certain applet may work under GNOME. As a n00b (or just a n99b so far), I don't really want to install, run or manage more than 1 desktop environment now, under Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid LTS. TIA

KDE4 applets (or plasmoids as they call them) are meant to be used only in KDE4 I think, as it's a core element of KDE. KDE desktop is quite different from the usual Gnome/OS X/Windows desktop, it's not just displaying files as icons + some widgets. So I don't think you can use them in Gnome.

And as you said, to mix desktop environments is rarely a great idea. You will need to run some KDE processes to make some applets work, and some may not even work.
