wireless modem driver -intel(r) PRO 3945ABG for ubuntu

Asked by generalgalapagos@yahoo.com

Hello from Turkey,

I have sony viao notebook(laptop) VGN-FE11H with preinstalled windows xp media center edition 2005. I dont want to use windows as long as possible and therefore I have installed Ubuntu 10.04. I have been using it for 2 weeks and everything was ok till I realize that there is no wireless connection. I made some seach on the web and find out that Intel has some kind of driver for linux for wireless modem intel(r) PRO 3945ABG.
Unfortunatelly the installation is very complicated for me ( they are asking to some operaitons with kernel...). So for it is too heavy to understand.

Therefore is it possible to make a driver for above mentioned wireless modem for my laptop. Or may be you can address more properly (in technical term) to Intel for our request( I do not understang very much of such kind technical issues to able to compile my request in consolidated manner)

Kind Regards,

Sezgin

Intel wireless 3945 have always worked for me out of the box (on various Thinkpads, Ubuntu Lucid). You shouldn't have to install any drivers from Intel.

Some laptops have a wireless switch that's easy to turn off accidentally. When it's off, the wireless is silently disabled, so make sure it's on. I'm not sure whether the Vaio has one, but it's worth checking.

Otherwise, if you still have Windows installed (e.g. dual-boot), could you try booting Windows and seeing if it can connect?

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo lsmod; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Regards,

Mark

Hello;

Sorry for the late feedback. I would like to inform you that my question is not valid anymore.
Because of the reason that the wiress modem that I have reported that is not working or not able to operate started to work after re installation of ubuntu 10.04 once again.

So as a summary:

1. My question is not valid any more since the wireless modem is working perfectly without any problem with Ubuntu 10.04. The wireless modem is recognized by Ubuntu by default.

2. Just I have formatted the harddrive and reinstalled the Ubuntu 10.04. I was not able to understand what was wrong. But whatever was wrong was due to my mistake.

3. Thank you very much.

Good day.
