64 bit niet geschikt voor dagelijks gebruik desktop??

In het verleden werden enkele programma's en drivers niet goed ondersteund met de 64-bits variant, waaronder bijvoorbeeld Adobe Flash en Sun Java. Tegenwoordig zijn er echter wel de nodige stuur programma's om ze 'native' onder 64-bits te draaien, of indien dat nog niet gaat, om ze 'virtueel' onder 32-bits te draaien mbv de ia32-lib bibliotheken.

Zeer waarschijnlijk staat er op de Ubuntu website zelf dat x64 niet aangeraden wordt omdat 10.04 een LTS versie is, met langere ondersteuning. Hoewel de meeste programmas al wel in x64 mode kunnen draaien zijn er nog wel enkele waarbij dat niet gaat. Zo voorkomen ze mogelijkerwijs problemen met die ondersteuning.
(Dit is mijn mening, ik ben niet van Ubuntu en kan dus niet met zekerheid zeggen waarom ze het daar afraden.)

Ik draai persoonlijk ook de 64-bit versie als desktop en heb nog geen problemen gehad van software die niet draaide doordat hij enkel met 32-bits architectuur om kan gaan. Is dat wel het geval, dan staan er onderaan mijn link nog enkele mogelijke oplossingen.

Most probably the ubuntu website does not recommend the 64bit version because 10.04 is a LTS version, with extended support. While most programs do run in 64bit mode, there are a few that do not support it. By recommending 32bit they don't run into this problem at all. (This is my opinion, I'm not affiliated with Ubuntu and thus only assuming this is the reason why it is so.)

Personally I run the 64bit desktop version and have not run into any problematic software that didn't run because it was 32bit only. If that is the case, the link above has a number of possible solutions.

It seems significant to me that Canonical comes with an explanation. Because the company never came out with such a statement, it seems a brand new policy to me.
Everyone is free to speculate what the reason for this decision is, but is not very relevant imho.
