Changing home folder location

Asked by Chethan S.

As a precaution to protect my home folder contents when I reninstall ubuntu if need arises I intend to change my home folder location to a mounted ntfs partition in my HDD. How can I do it the GUI way? Like in windows the "My Documents" location can be changed by going to "My Document" properties and entering the new location.

linux and ubuntu`s home folder is not the same as windows My Documents folder ... it is more like C:\Document and Settings\User wich is hidden or in new versions of windows just C:\User\User wich is also hidden, so as you can see it is not the same folder.

But if you need that the solution is quite simple you could just create My Documents folder on that partition by hand and put there your documents and pictures and everything else that you need and that is it..

If you need different partition for home folder where are all your settings also (and not just My Documents) here is one small walkthrough: http://embraceubuntu.com/2006/01/29/move-home-to-its-own-partition/ or more gui way: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome

and a few things about ntfs:
- you have to defrag ntfs - ext4 is not a problem
- if you want to write files to ntfs, ubuntu have to do the special adopted way to do that - on ext4 it is native way

I hope this clarify things a bit.
