Installing Ubuntu 6.06

Asked by jossmalo

I am currently trying to install Ubuntu 6.06 on an older computer that used to have Windows 98. As soon as Select "Start or Install" It loads for a minute and i get stuck on a screen with many not understandable letters. I would type what it says but, it's just lines and other weird pictures. I have gotten to the installation before, but it said it had an error, and stupid me didn't write it down... I am a begginner so detailed answers would be Very helpful!

Have you tried to install Ubuntu using the alternative CD installation disc or even the newer 7.04 version of Ubuntu?

I tried the 7.04 version of Ubuntu, but it was like MS-DOS, I thought i installed the wrong one, so I tried 6.06. I am acually trying to download Xubuntu 6.06 in hopes of that solving my problem. Do you think it might possibly be a bad hardrive? because if that is so, i can try to get a diffrent one. (one i pulled off an older system.

What do you mean is was like MS-DOS? I think you mean you are forced into 'text mode', don't be alarmed by this, it doesn't mean its not working. Are there any error messages displayed??

Version 7.04 is 10 months newer than 6.06 so if anything drivers and the general look of the system/install is newer. Using xubuntu uses the same base system as ubuntu but with the advantage that it uses Xfce to display the windows/programs etc. Xfce uses less computer resources so it should run better on old PC's.

If you posted your computer specs it may be easier to decide whether you should use Ubuntu (which uses the Gnome graphical environment) or Xubuntu, which as Scott already mentioned uses XCFE. Gnome requires 256MB of RAM, so if you are below this mark you may want to try Xubuntu.

Here are the requirements for Xubuntu straight from the website:

"To run the Desktop CD (LiveCD + Install CD), you need 128 MB RAM to run or 192 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only required you to have 64 MB RAM.

To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB of free space on your hard disk.

Once installed, Xubuntu can run with 64 MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to use at least 128 MB RAM."
