Creating a CD for older desktop

Asked by Joseph Miceli

I would like to create a ubuntu CD for an older computer now running Win98
which has no CD burner or USB port
I also have a newer computer, HP2009m, running WinVista with ability to burn a CD
Can I download ubuntu, burn a CD, and run this on the Win98 computer?
Thank you

Of course. So long as your computer can boot from a CD (and, unless it's more than about 15 years old, that's highly likely), that's exactly the procedure to use.

http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download even has those step-by-step instructions.

VERY IMPORTANT: be sure to check the md5sum of your downloaded iso before to burn it...

Hi,

With modern Ubuntu, you also need at least 256 MB of RAM to be able to run the live CD Desktop.

If your Win98 computer has less than 256 MB of RAM and at least 128 MB, there are other alternatives like Lubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.

Is there a good ISP in Boston area that supports Linux-based
OS's? Thanks again

Ubuntu Boston University Mirrors:

Launchpad Link: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+mirror/www.lug.bu.edu-archive
HTTP: http://www.lug.bu.edu/mirror/ubuntu/
FTP: ftp://ftp.lug.bu.edu/mirror/ubuntu/

See Launchpad for specific distro's, Maverick through Dapper.

A simple, one step ISO Freeware burner I've used for years: (BurnCDCC): http://burncdcc.en.softonic.com/

Most any box capable of Running Win-98 should be able to run Ubuntu and as others have stated, Xubuntu adn Lubuntu are low resource alternatives.

If you need further assistance, post the question or see us in the #ubuntu IRC.
