boot problems

i've got a acer aspire one, with ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix installed. but when i start up the system does'nt startup(boot) all i get is a black screen, with a "blinking" marker in the top left corner. i tried to re-install but with no luck fixing the problem.
another issue is: when i boot from the usb stick, and test driving ubuntu. i can't install the hardware driver to connect to internet. so i don.t get to use ubuntu at all. can anyone help me fix these problems?
