10.10 a2 VERY slow what's going on?

Asked by iham loest

Same system -
9.10 - some issues but very fast
10.04 - addressed some issues, still very fast - problems playing flash and video (highly compressed in particular - 720p+ mkv under any/all video players)
DL'd VLC 1.1 yesterday under 10.04 - radically increased mkv performance using it - 720p no longer froze/block-pixelated 1080i/p much better - some freezing/blockiness sporadically.
then Upgraded to 10.10 a2

Flash HORRID, Video Bad, system slow to respond, mouse drags of windows jerky, multiple open tabs in browsers (ChromePlus/Chrome/Opera/FF/Midori/Songbird) - tab icons flash rapidly/block out - whole tabs disappear (blank - still actually there just don't see them) scrolling in browser slow, accessing terminal slow, other programs slow... etc
system bog from too many programs/instances open happens with about 1/20th the amount under 9.1/10.04

WHAT ON EARTH!!!????

Did you ever try 9.10 or 10.04 Alpha versions? There are debugging programs running in development versions that's why are slow, so don't expect everything to work perfect, if you want fast and stable version then please use 9.10 or 10.04.

yes I used alpha of both - no problems
and actually used older versions - both test and lts
but the older not on this particular computer
this is the 1st time where it's like trying to install vista ultimate on a 386dx2-50 or the like (really - probably not but it conveys the approximate point)

Log a bug for each program separately

So nobody has any clue
I can't find any info on this
This appears to be a catastropic failure
Rather than saying I'm having Issue X (a particular issue) on more than a hundred different programs I thought it best to lump the issues in one.

I seem to be the only person on the planet experiencing any such problems with this being slower than death/memory problems/GPU?? issues/tabs blanking out (sign of memory leaks?)

And I checked back and on THIS system (with the issues w/10.10a2) I've used alphas and betas from 7.10 to current with exception of 8.10 and have never had any problem even close to this
it's a dual core 32bit with 6gb ram and this seems ridiculous
just updated to the newest gpu drivers which I thought might be at issue - and no change.

problems exist in all internet browsers
in the desktop w/ nothing at all (not even compiz)
enabling compiz - in that as well
in all image/video/games/openoffice/programming/all system preference and administration that I've tried so far
VERY slow to wake up from sleep
Slow to let enter keys and passwords
SLOW AT EVERYTHING
Open a brand new browser and more than a couple tabs and they start flipping out
Sometimes open even ONE tab and it does.

intel 945GM
I was going to try it on some other systems with nVidia and ATI but have decided to hold off for now with the problems and I currently suffer from lack of time to mess with them - one cluster (expletive) is enough right now.
It mostly seems as though there is a massive memory allocation problem thought I haven't seen a drain on resources indicating anything of the kind.

I updated to latest drivers including trying the xorg no effect

It also is periodically rebooting itself. I've not seen the actual shutdown but I've witnessed the reload into the desktop gui and login screen. I thought that might be power management but I've since turned it off plugged and unplugged and it's stil doing it.... I will post a separate issue for this. This shouldn't be an overheat issue as it's not overheating... temps are low.

Please report the bug. "Ask a question" is not the place for bugs report, especially for versions that are under development. Thank you!

I have had this problem on my Pentium 4 as well, I looked at the system CPU usage, when nothing is open that doesn't start on startup (except CPU usage) and I am not doing anything the scale settles around half, when I am just moving my mouse around not clicking or moving it over anything special the scale goes up to about 80%!

Can you help with this problem?
