I would like to replace Windows ME with Ubuntu

Asked by Dreampainter

I want to replace Windows ME with Ubuntu, OR have a dual boot format in which I will not attempt to use windows anymore. I do not have the Windows ME CD as this laptop came without one, so what should I do? It's an older laptop that worked fine until my friends daughter downloaded some music and now it does not boot to Windows anymore. Can you help me with what to do? PLEASE?

The Laptop in question has 20gig hard drive and 256 mgs of Ram(to my knowledge) so installing should not be a problem but I want to know what to do and how to do it. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Dreampainter
In case you don't own a copy of an Ubuntu CD, get one. Here you can find several methods to do so:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu
Once you get your copy, boot from the CD and you'll see Ubuntu in action with a LiveCD (you will be able to use it without affecting your machine, here's a short document about it: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD).
Once you decide you're ready to install, you will find an "Install" icon in Ubuntu's Desktop, click on it and follow the instructions. As easy as it sounds.
Don't worry if you face problems, just drop by, tell us about them and we will help you.

Good luck!

I have a dial-up connection so cannot download the software, unfortunately, so have requested a CD to be sent to me. My problem is how can I use the LIVE CD software download link of the computer will not boot to Windows? I CAN go to my friend's house and use her cable connection to download the software but since my laptop does not have a CD Burner I cannot save it to CD so that won't work, unless I can make the CD on my friend's computer. Well thank you for your help, this might not work for me until I get the CD...but hopefully it will!
In the mean time, on the CD that I rfequested from Ubuntu, to be mailed to me, will THAT CD have LiveCD so I can test it then?

Yes, the CD always has a LiveCD included (burnt CD or sent by mail). You get it, put it in the driver and boot from it and Ubuntu will start right away. I guess you should make a copy in your friend's house.
Another option:
I don't know where you are geographically but maybe there's a LoCo Team near you and maybe they can send you a copy in short time.
Check here, find the LoCo that belongs to your place and contact them (usaully you can use a forum, a mailing list or and irc channel: all listed there) and ask if somebody can handle a CD copy to you so you can try it right away: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeamList

Good luck!
