Resolution setup of xorg.conf

I cannot set my screen resolution to widescreen 1440x900. I've tried all kinds of methods posted on the forums. When will Ubuntu supply default widescreen resolutions. Here's my ORGINAL xorg.conf file as ALL the edited ones on the forum don't work:

Yes Linux is a method which enables people to edit / program - but some of us like things just to work! When I used WindowsXP I could just click my resolution from the control panel.

Can you tell me when I will have the same ease of operation like in Windows with Ubuntu
