recovery from live Cd

After crash of Karmick 9.10 I am trying to save my files which were in KarmicK with new version LucydL 10.4 livecd mode, before installing it, but I cannot find them anymore:
did I lose them?
Can I install new version and forget files I could not back up in time?

Why do you not have a backup if your data is important? What if the drive motor fails. Data recovery literally costs thousands of dollars but a 500Gb USB drive is a couple of hundred.

You can mount interal partitions from the live cd and copy to a healty (or just an external) partition for storage. If the partition is screwed you can use foremost to maybe recover data but you will need a partition large enough to store the data you require
