Upgrading to Ubuntu 10.4 Beta 2 from 9.10 broke wireless connection

Asked by Alan Musnikow

Immediately after upgrading a Dell Inspiron 1545n laptop from Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx, Beta 2, I could not connect to my wireless network.
Six months ago I had downloaded and installed bcmwl-kernel-source_5.10.91.9+bdcom-0ubuntu4_i386.deb in order to connect to my wireless network with Ubuntu 9.10 and a Broadcom wireless chip.
How do I get that connection working again?

The following worked for me:
    * I clicked System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager -> Settings -> Repositories, which opened the Software Sources window.
    * In that window, in the Ubuntu Software tab, I clicked on the box to check "Software restricted by copyright or legal issues (multiverse) and clicked the Close button.
    * In the Synaptic Package Manager window, I clicked Reload, Mark All Upgrades, and Apply.
    * When it was done, "Quick search" for "bcmwl" in the Synaptic Package Manager window listed only the packages bcmwl-kernel-source and bcmwl-modaliases, both with Installed Version and Latest Version 5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu3.
    * After I Restarted the laptop, it connected wirelessly automatically.
