lost menu bars

Running 9.10 Gnome 2.28.1 One day the top and bottom menu bars went away. Looked at forum and found the Alt F2 Run and type xfce4-panel and it comes up,but have to do it every time boot up,why can't it stay there like it used to work. I don't have any problems like lot of guys running this but some things sure get me. Am a newbie so thanks for the help.

in your startup items add an item to run the command, It should be under system -> preferences
