Poppy812,

You don't mention what email application you are using to download the images with.

Check if they are: A) being downloaded to the "Downloads" folder in your Home directory (~/Downloads) or B) in your Home folder or C) in your Desktop folder (~/Desktop)

Notice the capital D in both Downloads and Desktop.

Best of luck,
George

If you've been using Firefox to download anything, you can use its Downloads list to find those things.
In Firefox, go to Tools > Downloads
Right-click an item in the Downloads window, and choose Open Containing Folder
That will open whichever folder was used to save that download. Your other downloads will likely be there too.

Ok,some of this helps. Yes have been going to home/download folder but when open there is nothing. Am using firefox. Ok the tools> download works to find download folder and it opens up but can't open with open containing folder,it is greyed out. Only thing can open is copy download link, select all, remove.

Your question is confused.
Did you:
   1) use a Webmail inside Firefox and download some e-mail attached file
   2) directly download from Firefox

If in Tools->Download, the Open command is grey in contextual menu, it means usualy that file was deleted or moved in another folder.

I am using att.net to get my email and when get a picture and download it it shows going to download folder. It shows a list of all the stuff downloaded. Will go to a site and download a doc or something and it shows downloading to download folder. Have a download folder, documents, pictures, music, on desktop so go to it to find my download but there is nothing there. I haven't moved it to another folder that I know of. Thanks for your help.

Desesparate solution:
In a terminal do:

cd $HOME
find . -print | xargs fgrep <name of downloaded file>

You should get the full pathname of the file (and a lot of error message).
Be carefull, name of first directory can start with ".".

Hi :)

Another way to try to find where stuff is hiding. Open Firefox & click on

Edit - Preferences - Main (1st tab at top)

Halfway down the page it says where it is saving downloads to. You might want to change that. Please copy&paste into here the place where it says downloads are going at the moment. At the moment it could be 1 of at least 2 places

/home/downloads
or something like
/home/poppy/Desktop/downloads
exact details of the 2nd option is not quite clear yet.

Use the "Browse" button to change where your downloads go but keeping things on the desktop will slow you system down. It is better to move your downloads folder into your "Documents" folder and then right-click on it to "Make link" and then drag the link onto the desktop. Links are very small and light-weight so they don't affect the desktop much.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Ok,thanks everyone. Did the CD $ Home thing and came up with a long list, don't know how to paste it to here but it showed a lot of the pic file names and said "no such file or directory". They have got to be somewhere cause is in the download folder. I did go in and do the edit preferences and told it where to send the downloads,/home/ross/documents/download. I did go back and save a pic from email and it went to the download folder, comes up on screen and now when do the right click it will show open and it works but will not do any of the old stuff downloaded. Now when select doc/download it will show the folder but when open will not show anything, even the one that went into the download folder. Have got a few things better but not all the way. Sure do appreciate you guys trying to help me,where do you learn all the little ins and outs of how to do this stuff???

Hi :)

It is amazing how fast you tend to learn this type of stuff & it quickly builds up into something that helps you do some great stuff :) Mostly we learn this stuff by experience. Going through troubles such as you are having now is probably one of the best ways to learn. Most people are 'lucky' enough never to go through problems like this so they never build up a thorough understanding. So they tend to miss out on a lot of very clever tricks & interesting stuff.

Ok, for new downloads you can access them by going up to the top taskbar and click on

Places - Documents

and in the file-browser window click on "downloads"? Although it is great to have a central place for getting all downloads so that you know where they are it is better to then move (drag&drop) pictures into the "Pictures" folder and music into the "Music" folder. Each of these sorts of folders is specially modified to suit the type of files they expect to find. The pictures folder should show "thumbnails" of each picture. More importantly it is easier for you to find stuff months later when it's filed in the right place & if it's not there then it's probably in "downloads" right? I try to de-clutter my downloads folder about once a week but it usually ends up being a few months before i get around to it. If you happen to know that you are only going to download pictures during a particular session then it might be worth temporarily changing the default download place through
Edit - Preferences - Main
but i tend to forget to switch it back again after doing something like that & then everything is completely lost lol.

For the previous pictures try getting to a command-line and type

cd /home/downloads
ls

where "ls" is a lower-case "LS" & should show a LiSt of everything in that folder. Are your pictures in there? Does the folder exist there? If not then try

cd /home/ross/downloads
ls

Anything there? How about

cd /home/ross/documents/downloads
ls
cd /home/ross/desktop/downloads
ls

Now try this & see if you notice the difference in the commands

cd /home/ross/Documents/downloads
ls
cd /home/ross/Desktop/downloads
ls

Hopefully by now you will have found all the pictures. Please let us know which of the commands worked! Also if you know the exact name, or part of a name, of one of the files then there is another neat trick for trying to find that file & hence know where the rest of them are. So, please tell us the name of a file, if you can remember.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

More checking and if download something today will go to the download list, one that opens up when select it from email, and can open it today but if shut down and try to do it tomorrow it won't let me open it. Somehow I have managed to have a icon on desktop with some pics in it. When go to download name and select it goes to the desktop folder the one with pics in it. If go to documents and have a download folder it won't show anything. Thanks for your help, will still keep trying. Been couple of days since messed with it and forgot what have done. Did download a PDF and it went to documents ok,think. Thanks for help, you guys are great.

It looks strange. But if your downloads disappear after reboot, it could means they are under "/tmp".
This folder contains temporary date which must be deleted at reboot.

In post of 2010-04-21, I see: "./.recently-used:<URI>file:///tmp/photos.pps</URI>".

For what I understood, you use a WebMail to download pictures. You must configure it to save in your home folder or when it opens the download window choose home folder.
Unfortunetly problems seems lying not in Ubuntu but in WebMail and I have not it. So it is difficult to help.

Hi :)

Just make sure your Firefox

Edit - Preferences - General

"Downloads" - "Save file to ..."

is set to

/home/ross/Documents/downloads

and also makes sure you have a folder in your Documents folder called "downloads". Then you should be ok for anything new you download. My last post was pretty thorough so it might be worth working through that again and ticking off each point as you go through it.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Can you help with this problem?
