cant run game dvd

I have a burnt copy of Age Of Empires III on a cd, it works perfectly fine on a windows computer, however on mine (ubuntu 9.10) it doesnt even register. when ever i insert the cd into the cdrom it runs for a bit then stops. in "Computer" the CD/DVD drive disappears when ever i insert the cd. and then re appears when i take the disk out. However with other cd's like audio and normal game cd's an icon appears for me to select it. So the main propblem is, my pc isn't reading this specific cd, is there something i can type in terminal?

Open synaptic and install these packages;

libdvdnav4
libdvdread4
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly

after that open the terminal and enter;

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

<type in your password>
<press> y
<press> enter

Perhaps you need to reboot.

hi i followed the steps you gave me but this happened:

Its re tried six times already, do you really feel rebooting is the only option?

You might want to try installing Ubuntu Restricted Extras instead. Type sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras on a Terminal to install.

Hi :)

Ubuntu is not made to run Windows software. However, if you install Wine (=Wine Is Not an Emulator) then you should be able to get "Age of Empires" working. With Wine each Windows application may require a different set of tweaks, sometimes Windows stuff just wont work, sometimes it takes a lot of effort, usually it works quite easily (once you have installed Wine), sometimes it runs even faster on Ubuntu than it does in WIndows lol :)

Does your machine have internet access? Fromt he error messages it sounds as though the package manager was having difficulty connecting to the internet? Which version of Ubuntu are you running at the moment? I think running through the Medibuntu worksheet might solve the problem tho.

Since it sounds as though your Ubuntu install is quite new it is well worth first running through the Medibunut worksheet which should sort most of the multimedia issue for whichever country you happen to be in at the moment

I tend to keep the non-free components but if you are in the USA then you might not want them. I would keep them for a few weeks though, just until you adapt to linux a bit more first.

Once that is done then the advice for the first response should work, hopefully. Also install Wine using this

sudo apt-get install wine

or if you would prefer a gui package manager rathe than a cli one then go up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synapic

and use either search tool to help find and install wine.

Medibuntu repo has been having some issues lately.

Install wine, it gets a gold rating and needs a few dll files putting into the:

~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/

folder to make it work. There are some nice tips if you scroll the page down.

Can you give the output of:

cat /etc/fstab

and we can get your CD mounted nice.
