karmic 64 bit install not seeing sata hdd
Asked by

hi,
I've been given a new(er) pc with win xp already on a 160gb SATA hard drive, when I try to install Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic) along side onto the same drive the install gets far as setting up the partitions (step 4 of 6 I think!) and stops as the partitioner does not 'see' the hdd.
As already mentioned the hdd already has win XP on it and is working fine.
for the record machine specs are:
AMD 64 3500+
2.5gb RAM
Nvidia geoforce 6600 graphics
160gb SATA hdd (connected to 'SATA1' on m-board, no SATA0)
This is not the first time I have installed Ubuntu although it is the first time I have used a 64bit install or SATA hdd.
Using 9.10 (Karmic) 64bit install cd
Many thanks
Pete
