Asus Acer Ubuntu 9.10 overheat

Asked by costa

Hello,
Would appreciate very much, if someone could help me with my overheating (Asus Acer, quite old model).

Last time, I've updated my Ubuntu and installed the latest - Ubuntu 9.10. It's working perfectly, but I have an issue with overheating now (ther were no problems with previous version).

I've read lots of posts, found one bug related to it, understood, that the issue is minor, but still unsure, what exactly should be done in order to sove it completely.

Would apreciate your feedback re. this question.

I decided to ask cause during my experiments of solving this issue thelaptop already switched off twice and I would like to avoid it's frequent overheating.

Thanks and regards,
Konstantin

Basicallty the laptop is garbage, the fan is controlled by software instead of a good quality hardware sensor to do it automagically. Mind you what do yuo expect...its an acer

I downloaded the archive and thied to run it, but it says permission denied.

Second link didn't help me as well.

It's step#3

gedit acer_fancontrol

I can't edit it.

I also tried to run downloaded archive in terminal, but the permission was denied.

I'm wondering, if there any alternative ways to solve this issue, may be to download another, moreupdated kernel somehow or I dont know...

Anyway, thank you very much for advice...

$ gedit acer5720_fancontrol.sh

Tu dois faire avant: "mv acer5720_fancontrol.sh acer_fancontrol" dans le répertoire qui contient acer5720_fancontrol.sh.

I did all my best, but still was unable to solve this issue, so I reinstalled Ubuntu 8.10. and now it's working perfectly.

Thanks anyway!

Go to the manufacture of your computer/laptop model, check to see if there are updates for the Bios for your model. (if you built it yourself you may need to go the motherboard's manufacturer site and check for BIOS update. Get the latest update if it is available. More often than not, there will be an .exe file you can use that will flash/update your Bios for you. They may have one that will do it from Dos and one that will do it from Windows. I used the one for Windows. Follow the instructions. If your computer does not restart for you after Bios update, restart your computer. Check your Bios to see if you now have the latest Bios update for your computer. When I did this my computer had a senior moment at first. While using an alternative OS the fan would start then stop, start then stop, start then stop, then it worked normally even though I used Slax, Ubuntu (all version) and Slacko. Now I can use any OS I want to as long as I have the proper system req. No more overheating problems. *Warning: Be careful. Do not flash the wrong Bios update for you computer/motherboard or your computer will be rendered useless.*
