I recommend doing a clean install of Ubuntu 9.04 and then following this workaround procedure:

http://lists.us.dell.com/pipermail/linux-desktops/2009-November/003323.html

Ubuntu 9.10 does not seem to like your wireless card.

Your PC is probably experiencing this bug:

Hey I had the exact same problem on the XPS 1530, and I have a solution to this particular issue.

Using the documentation from Broadcom's Linux driver (which works for numerous chipsets)

http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt

I installed the necessary file (wl.ko) and wrote the following script, which should be automatically run at boot time.

# First, cd into proper directory
cd dir_containing_wlko/
# Remove ssb module, which is loaded automatically on Karmic (blacklisting it didnt even work)
sudo rmmod ssb
# Then load the security modules
sudo modprobe lib80211
# Finally, load the wl.ko file
sudo insmod wl.ko

You might have to do a network restart as well, sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Though it isn't the most elegant solution, it works without problems.

Having said that, my friendly advice would be to go back to Jaunty as Mark suggested, there are more and more problems with this particular Dell product and the current Karmic release. I stumbled here looking for a similar script to get my Omnivision 0V2640 integrated webcam working (the device is recognized but wont work with any program).

Hope it helps
