Winamp is a Windows program.. There are options for other programs in Ubuntu.. You could try installing Winamp using Wine.. Ubuntu doesn't use .exe files... Which probably explains why half the stuff you download doesn't install. Look in the Software Center for applications that will do what you are wanting to do.. There are quite a few music players.. Rhythmbox is one.

Hi :)

I quite like this one too

Every install of Ubuntu needs someone to work through the Medibuntu worksheet to sort out their multimedia

This deals with copyright issues for your country. I tend to keep non-free components until i feel ready to make the final move to going completely OpenSource.

These 2 might help further

There is a guide to making Ubuntu look a lot more like Windows which is good for the 'homesick' but then it makes it difficult to try to interpret answers from the forums, unless the answers stick to the command-line ... So, i would avoid changing the default layout too much.

Normally i would advise people to install Ubuntu as a dual-boot alongside whichever OS they do have pre-installed on their system. Most of us have dual-boot. I found it useful until i got to the point where i could do everything i needed in linux. Now i find it useful for when Windows users ask me how to fix their Windows problem.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
