dual boot what happens to the other OS files

Do files disapear if i dual boot vista with linux ubuntu or others?

OS's can see other OS's files as along as they have support for the filesystem being used.

Ubuntu can read NTFS files so it will see your Vista files. Vista won't be able to read your Ubuntu partition without the help of a third party ext4 driver. I know there's an ext3 driver for Windows but I don't know about ext4.
