Ubuntu Desktop problem gone

Asked by ROB3RT

So, I'm using the Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Alpha 2. One day when I was running the update manager, the screensaver came up, after 5 minutes. No biggie, that is supposed to happen. So, I shake the mouse, and enter my password. Then, it just says "checking" and it says that, and never logs me on... So, I had to do a hard boot. Now, when I boot up, I have my mouse, and a black screen. No panels, no background, nothing. I pressed the shutdown button, and the shutdown dialogue came up. All compiz effects also work. I'm in Firefox in Ubuntu now, because in the exit dialogue, I went to help, and then get help online.

I think something is wrong with the Ubuntu desktop package.
I've tried:
Opening a terminal using ALT + F2 - Didn't work. This would have allowed me to run the update-manager, and finish the update.
I tried downloading the Alpha 3, but I have no way to burn the .iso file to a DVD.
I've tried accessing files via Firefox, by changing the download settings.

So, can someone give me a way to get the desktop back? Or at least give me a download link, so I can download a terminal (must be in .deb form, only way I can install, I think GDebi package installer still works). Or a link to the repositories containing the latest Alpha 2 updates.

Let me know if you need any more info, and help is greatly appreciated.

Remember Lucid is in development, so failures like this are to be expected. You probably shouldn't run a development version if you don't have another stable machine.

Press Ctrl + Alt + F1 to switch to a command line terminal, then login and finish off the updates with sudo apt-get upgrade.

Hi :)

Please can you setup a dual-boot with a stable release of Ubuntu, such as Ubuntu 9.10 or Ubuntu 8.04? This guide help, just treat the development release as the pre-installed Windows
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

It is always worth running a LiveCd session of an Ubuntu before installing it
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Hopefully both the LiveCd and the fresh install of a stable Ubuntu should be able to read/write from/to your existing alpha install.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
