update manager error

problem is when i run update manager. i press install and it gives me this

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

then when i do this is it asks for password then it gives me this

dpkg: requested operation requires superuser privilege

don't know what superuser privekege is but help would be good

Try: sudo dpkg --configure -a
