Start-up screen, how?

Asked by george_rutkay

When starting up or shutting down Ubuntu, I'd like the screen with the name and the progress bar to appear. Right now on my computer it's just a black screen but at home it's working. Same computers, same install CD, yet a difference.

Please advise? Thanks.

The screen is called bootsplash. It depends on the framebuffer device - if that does not work there is no splashscreen - you could edit your grub-options (removing "quite" and "upsplash" should do) in order to see if there are any errors while starting.

Ok, when I get home I'll try it there! Thanks, I'll post the results to this thread.

Try command 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash' and then restart machine.

Sorry, it didn't solve it. After GRUB loads the kernel, the screen goes completely black for about 45 to 60 seconds, then the graphical log-in appears.

During that "black screen" time the Ubuntu logo and a progress bar are supposed to appear - that's what I'm trying to figure out, why it won't appear?

I figured it out!!! In my BIOS there is a field for the Video buffer. Only 2 settings - 1 MB and 8MB

For the above-mentioned symptoms, it was set at 1 MB. Setting it to 8 MB solved it!
