basically you do not need any extra application for these tasks, ubuntu comes with a PDF reader (evince) and an archiver (file-roller).
Whenever you try to open a PDF or RAR or ZIP file they will open in the right application.

If you cannot open certain rar files, try installing ubuntu-restricted-extras from synaptic (System->Administration->Synaptic package manager)
