Feedback on the Dell Inspiron M4040

I am unable to play HD video on my Dell Inspiron M4040 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04. Also when I check my system details I get my Graphics adaptar displayed as VESA: WRESTLER. Shouldn't it be something like Radeon GLX ? Also performance of my system goes for a toss every now and than. Specially my touchpad just becomes unresponsive. When I look into system performance stats through "top" I can see XOrg consuming lot of CPU on my box. I'm not sure what to interpret from these symptoms.

I have installed 12.04.1 on the M4040.

1. video file
What HD video file did you play?
I downloaded and played the following HD video from NASA on M4040, the video looks good.

(The movie player will ask to install two plugin files, just install them.)
Can you give more detail about how you play you video file?

2. I have run "lspci" to check the video adapter on M4040 and got below result.
VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI wrestler [Radeon HD 6310]

3. The M4040 here is running well, checked with command "top", there's no any process consuming a lot of CPU time.

Can you download and install the Ubuntu 12.04.1 AMD64 image? I hope it will help.

Hi Tim,

1. I am trying to play some MTS files which were recorded sometime back by me using my Sony Camera. These files just can't playback on Ubuntu on my Dell M4040, whereas they play flawlessly on Windows XP running on my PIV desktop.

I am using VLC to play these MTS files on Ubuntu 12.04

2. lspci gave me the same output as you've mentioned:

VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Wrestler [Radeon HD 6320]

However when I use "Details" app I see VESA:Wrestler as my Graphics.

3. top is again reporting Xorg as a process consistently consuming around 10-20% of CPU and 5-10% of my memory. I'm not too much concerned about memory usage as I'd upgraded my system to 4 GB of RAM but 10-20% of consistent CPU utilization by a core system process just doesn't sound right to me.

I am already using 64 bit Ubuntu on my machine so I think I don't need to do a reinstallation.

Do you perhaps need a proprietary driver installed to get full use? VESA doesnt support 3D acceleration, so HD is out the window there... also VESA is, IIRC, handled by the kernel on the CPU, not offloaded to the GPU, thus the increased load.

In any case, click on the Gear Icon and in that menu, select System Settings and then Additional Drivers.

That should scan your system and let you know if there are any proprietary drivers that could provide full hardware support for your ATI card.
