Feedback on the Dell Precision M4700

Asked by Ignacio Casal Quinteiro

I do not think that this laptop can be certified as the touchpad protocol is not supported in the kernel.

What version of Ubuntu are you running?

Currently, this laptop is only certified for the pre-installed version of Ubuntu (11.10, preinstalled).

This is not a matter of ubuntu, it is a matter of the linux kernel, which does not support the new protocol of the alps driver.
See https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45201 and http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-input/msg21728.html and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=812111

Canonical should push dell to get this working as most of the new dell laptops touchpads do not work properly.

The touchpad works as simple mouse, but no scrolling possible.

Also Dell does not provide the Touchpad drivers for Download.

I think Canonical should require that the necessary drivers are available by default or at least for download.

It would also be nice if Canonical could push an upgrade to 12.04 for that device. Still only available with Ubuntu 11.10

To give some more light on this, some patches have been submitted upstream and will be for the next kernel. See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=812111

Can you help with this problem?
